2 Headed Nickel

I was looking thru a box of nickels hunting for war Nickels and found a
1961 Jefferson with an Obverse strike on both sides.

Weight was the same as a regular strike.

Question: Anyone ever hear of these?

Question: Who would be best to check it out to see if it was a mint error?

Thanks

I think it's a magicians coin. Look for marks where two coins were put together. As I recall, the dies for coins are such that it's impossible to make a two headed coin.

Thanks - never thought of that lol

No marks that I can see but I just got a new Celestron handheld digital microscope (40x /400x ) that I'll be able to check the rim with and up load pics on my apple mini mac.

I have one of those I received in change a long time ago. On mine you can see where the nickel was milled out. Not a very good job. One side is 1973, the other is 1992. I use it to deal out chores to the kids, and always win.

Edit-I just weighed it and it weighs 5.7 grams.

Why it is Impossible for Two-Headed Coins to Come From the U.S. Mint
The U.S. Mint (and most other world mints) have built-in protections against accidentally making coins that have the improper die rotation or die setup. The shaft of the dies are made to be a certain size and shape, so that they will only fit into the coin presses a certain way. Dies that have the "heads" (or obverse) design on them have shafts of one shape (perhaps square,) while the dies with the "tails" (or reverse) have a different shaped shaft (perhaps round.) Since you can't put a square shaft into a round hole, this prevents the mint workers from accidently making two-headed (or two-tailed) coins.

Idiots - have they never heard of a brockage error? Look at this coin, two heads, error from the mint:

Here's the million dollar question - is one of the heads mirrored? If so, you have a very valuable mint error coin. I did a thread on mint errors in the past, look for the brockage description here for more info: http://goldismoney.info/forums/showthread.php?p=1776219

Re: 2 Headed Nickel

Well took it to a dealer I've know for a few years; He could not fine any marks. He has the same scale I have and we ran one of his nickels and the
2 Headed one - both weights were the same.

We both agree that IF it is a fake, the machinist was very good.

I spent hours on PCGS's website and found the following:

cheapest way to join - error grading not included in free package - grading -
shipping/ insurance both ways - would costs over $250.

There Auth dealer list did provide me with 5 others dealers to talk to if I go to
east or west coast.

Guess I try to catch them at a show in 2010, seeing I only have 3 other coins I might want graded.

So as it stands - "the trill of the find" - was great!

I know I have 5 cents lol

PS: anyone want to flip to see if it's a winner?

I call HEADS !!!

Thanks to all for the help and input ! :23_28_100s:

Re: 2 Headed Nickel

Take a loop and look inside the edge of the rim on both sides. You'll see where one was milled out and the other piece cutdown and inserted.

The mint uses a die with a square shaped machine "holder" for obverse sides and a round shaped machine "holder for reverse dies. This is done so that it is impossible to get a two-headed or two-tailed coin.

I did that, coin dealer did that and a friend that collects error coins did that
and no sign of any joints. 50x power on my Celestron handheld digital microscope showed no joint either. So no idea of how or why yet.
